As always, i'm living hard time these days because of many reasons... the most is about how i'm gonna make it through the drawing thing ? Do i have the will to make my way to the job i dream of ? Do i have enough skills to work as a comics artist or a character designer ?
Well, the thing is that i do know what it takes to be it and what i think i have to do : TO DRAW EVERYDAY, to be MORE PRODUCTIVE... but it's hard... i'm a bit confused right now... sometimes i wanna just stop dreaming off all of it, but at the same time dreaming is what keeps me alive...
But i'm not here to complain (i think is not the right place to do so

But I think it's the greatest to do a project of your own. Smaller publishers like Oni Press or Archaia are always looking for great talent like you. Do a Makaku Graphic Novel and send it to one of those or the many other publishers. I am sure they would buy it on the spot! Other artists like Corey Lewis started their career like that. He did Sharknife, sold it to Oni Press, and by doing so he got enough attention to do some work for Marvel, Image and Udon.
Hardest for an artist who doesn't get money for his work (yet) is to motivate himself. I am working on my project (Shaolin Grandmaster Killer!) for more or less 4 years now. I did some looooong pauses in those 4 years, because I lost motivation, I thought I wasn't any good and I didn't have the time to work on it, because I got two daytime jobs to pay my bills.
But I am still chasing my dream. And one day we will hopefully both have published our projects!
Come on, wouldn't it be great to see your book at some comic book shops? Imagine it! It would be really awesome, right?!
So, i think you got the stuff, you got the talent, all you need to do now is work (really f***ing) hard on your first graphic novel.
I will buy, that's for sure!
Thanks again man for what you've said it really meant something to me
Take care man and i'm looking forward you project too
I think you have to do alot to expose yourself to get there. Id also suggest you work alot with other artists. there are alot of line artist that have comic book pages that they are in process of publishing that they need colored. having your name as a contributor on anything professional or published is an excellent way to get that exposure and experience to showcase your ability.
I lastly i think that if you want to achieve this dream, you should work on your own characters and develope a portfolio,a story, and art to produce a something like a book or comic. learn about patents and publishing. and from there you could either try to do things on your own or let someone to pay you for its adoption in like a movie, animation, game concept or tv show or something. Im by no means an expert on any of this and its almost all speculation but i do believe most of it is just exposure to the public. Just look at Antoine Dodson. he didnt do anything but make him self look silly in a 10 second newsinterview about a rape attempt and he already did a couple commercials and has fan clubs(OMFG I really cant believe that last one but it's true).
Anyway I'm in a very similar position as you, I think, but with illustrators I think the best thing is to try to illustrate everyday regardless of the subject...so if you're not feeling creative about developing your own stuff do fan art and draw from life. Eventually the lightning bolt strikes and you'll be better prepared for it.
this summer, i did few fan arts and it helped me a lot to keep up the drawing process, now i'm really heading to my makaku project,i 'm thinking of making a graphic novel about it but it's hard to begin lol ! i drew makaku so many times that i've problems to draw some new characters suppose to be in the same universe, but i'm gonna make it anyway i don't even worry about that but it still hard to begin lol
Thanks a lot guys...really
I love your work. I think it's one of the most visceral and unique styles I've seen in a long time I would love to see devoted to an original work or publication. That said, I think doing fan art is a good idea as a means to an end.
First, it always draws more public and professional attention. I've done enough shows and witness first hand how an artist can wrangle work and money with an opening piece of fan art in their portfolio.
Second, it hitting two birds with one stone by, doing as mentioned above, but also builds your portfolio for editors who almost never care for original works.
Third, you can sell the works, bringing immediate cash return, justifying your efforts, and building your artistic esteem so you don't question yourself. One of the hardest things about being any kind of artist is we thrive on acceptance from those around us. That's who we're doing this for, not just for ourselves. It's our way of conveying a message or idea we feel compelled to share, we want to be heard, seen, acknowledged. In this world, one of the best and most satisfying ways of doing that is monetary gain. if you can get someone to part with their cash, you know you're work, what you have to say, has value.
Hope that helps!
